The Trial Hole is a location designed to reduce the cost of containing criminals. In the city of Karoath, a criminal that has been judged guilty and who is held in a dungeon is given one opportunity to plead his case. The individual is permitted to fight a gladiatorial combat against a judicial champion. The Trial Hole is where these battles occur.

This is the primary road leading between the cities of Karoath and Fanchester. The hilly terrain is a haven for bandits and can be very risky to travel.

Karoath citizens believe that a person's soul is not freed upon death if the body is not exposed to sunlight. As punishment for the worst crimes, authorities place a criminal in one of these chambers and let the person starve to death. The body is never exposed to sunlight. This is the worst possible form of punishment because the person's soul will never be free.
